There are free versions of AMF remoting for PHP, Java, .NET, Perl and a few
others. 

And as far as porting your app over, it's all about the app. I'm in the same
situation and I've found that you need to weigh your options carefully and
list the reasons that would make it worthwhile. Don't do it simply because
it's the newest thing, do it because it makes sense to do it.

To be anal, you do not need CF to play with Flex. Obviously if you
want to use Flash Remoting it makes sense, but if you just want to
_learn_ Flex and play on your laptop, you don't need CF.

Of course - I think all computers should have CF installed on them -
but that's just me.
