Yeah as have we (VSS I mean), being such a large Microsoft customer we were kind forced to, but when you use SVN or alike you realise just how bad VSS is for such RAD development as web dev is.
Microsoft would be the first to say that it is not that well suited, even VSS 2005 which we have here has some token web stuff added but in all reality it is the same product from 15+ years (which I used for 10 or so) ago when Microsoft thought the web would not catch on :-) it is and was built primarily for Windows development. Granted it works well with DW but if you want great source control for web development I would say look no farther than VSS. VSS, in terms of web development within teams, has little or no useful branching or tagging or code and it's merging simple does not work well and cannot be trusted, not good when working in large teams. In all reality, it is as basic as basic gets for Source Control and IME it us just a way to back up code in a check-in/out basis. I am not sure if the is a VSS port to Linux, but it is a typical MS install on Windows. I think VSS is simpler to use because it is a native Windows app, but Subversion is still stiff competition for VSS in that it is free and it is just as rich and robust of an application. If you are in a Linux/Unix environment, Subversion is the only answer. There are several GUI front ends like KDESVN and RapidSVN that can be used on the graphical desktops like KDE and Gnome. I just set up Subversion on a linux dev box (Ubuntu) with no probs at all. Subversion also has a great set of command line commands to set up repositories and add/remove files to them. If your developers are on Windows boxes, they can get TortiseSVN to commit/update/checkout files they are working on. They're looking for the best way to roll-out something like Subversion (or similar, if it makes more sense) in a way that works right inside Dreamweaver 8 and flows nicely with their current process of deployment to staging / production servers. The goal here is to get the maximum benefits of version control without using 2 different applications (Dreamweaver + tortoiseSVN for example). Maybe a best-of-breed Subversion extension for Dreamweaver is the answer here. We're looking for someone who's been through the trial and error in setting this up - and has experience using a setup that works. >It really isn't rocket science, check in/check out...:-) or are they >having issues actually setting it up? > > > > > >"This e-mail is from Reed Exhibitions (Gateway House, 28 The Quadrant, >Richmond, Surrey, TW9 1DN, United Kingdom), a division of Reed >Business, Registered in England, Number 678540.
