Les, Have you tried copying the cell and doing a "Paste Special>Values"?
Sometimes, with a cell that's been worked alot Excel stores all sorts of weird stuff in there. I've run into this before on files that were unusually large for what they contained. Doing a Select All>Copy>Paste Special>Values fixed it. That is if you're transferring from an .xls file and not a .csv.
