I seem to remember replacing permissions on my servers folder with the domain user. You're definitely on the right track....
one thing i did use is Filemon (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/filemon.mspx) which shows the file access in real time so you can diagnose where it's failing john.
