I concur with the "from scratch" method. I bought some blog software a couple of years back and it took me longer to stuff the code into my software's authentication scheme than it would have taken me to write it from scratch. Learning from that lesson recently, I looked around at all the examples I could find for a good polling tag or sites that offer free inline-polls, and taking the best ideas and layouts and workflows from all of them wrote my own in a few hours. Now it's exactly the way I want it and of course integrates completely into my codebase. Plus, I own it.
