I think what you proposed sounds fine. The one thing you'll probably need to think about regardless, is how long are you going to store those temp images?
That's pretty much all I can think of that you'd need to think about. If you tie it to the session, I guess you could tie the removal to the session close event? Or leave them all in a temp directory, and move the ones that get finalized when they're finalized. Hrm... still gotta clean out the temps from the DB at some point. Eh. HIH!
