When you just see <. instead of the web page you are expecting, this indicates that your CFMX 6.1 server is not fully patched as it was fixed many many moons ago. It also indicates that your server is restarting itself as the <. used to get displayed when the CF service was not started or starting but the webserver was handling requests...
Patch your server and then watch your logs for the reasons as to why your server is restarting so much.
