I think you're working very hard to preserve a textbook definition of what you think the client's software should be. The owner of that software may well disagree with your definition. They even may know what they need and how to safeguard themselves in ways that have nothing to do with ossifying their software. Listen to the client's needs and define your parameters based on those needs.
