It's useful to think of CFC instances just like you would any other
variable. If a variable can be manipulated by multiple concurrent requests,
and those manipulations could cause a race condition (and you actually care
about the logical error caused by the race condition), you need to lock it.
It doesn't matter whether the variable contains a CFC or some regular data
type.
