Dan,

I use a direct export to IIF files, which Quickbooks can read natively.

IIF files can be tricky to handle, though since you have to get the
account names(or numbers) just right to make the export populate the
correct accounting lines. You'll need a copy of the customers QB
database (and Quickbooks of course) and then be prepared to run the
import and keep restoring the database until you get the lines just
right on the import file.

Quickbooks also supports the Web Connect file format, which is much
easier to use as you can assign things line-by-line and QB remembers
your selection on future imports. Unfortunately only Financial
Institutions are supported for Web Connect at this time. Hopefully,
they will standardize a schema that can be used to import orders,
invoices, and customers at some time in the future.

I've got an accounting component that I use to handle the exports and
delivery of the files, but the schemas used for the file formats are
specific to my company and my cart solution . I haven't played
with the WebConnector software (http://marketplace.intuit.com/
webconnector/) since it's a Windows-Only deal and I use QB for the
Mac, but that might be an easier solution if your client is on Windows.

Jon

P.S. If you still want to have a go at rolling your own IIF's, feel
free to e-mail me off-list.
