I agree with you, but let me just add that server side validation does 
not have to work exactly the same way.

What I mean is that client side validation is to be preferred and used 
mostly for the user comfort,
when server side is especially needed to prevent from malicious data 
sent by people who intentionally
will deactivate Javascript and client side validation.

For instance, one may check client side that a requested field is not 
empty, or that a date is a valid date,
and friendly warn the user if something is wrong, before he submits the 
form.
Server side, I  will let the database engine protests if the field is 
empty anyway or if the date is still invalid.
I will not loose my time with people horsing around with my forms and 
trying to work around my user friendly interface.
Thus, server data validation can be limited to security concerns.
