Mark, Actually I wrote my own view for eclipse, and you can state where to put the contents within the view via the standard layout options available to you. You can even have a hook to resize, soth you can calculate the view size and even decide to split the cols or change the layout on the fly if you so desire.
If you want more information I will be happy to show you the code that does this, but all views work of the Swing layout styles.
