You could also try:

Try doing this:
(pathto)/bin/httpd -e debug

That'll give some extra startup warning messages.  What does it say?

What OS are you running?  What version of Apache HTTPd?

Also, check the httpd error log files, see if there are any SSL error
messages.

A few nights ago I got Apache running on my home machine with an SSL
cert and it is working just great.
