The transition to J2EE was the best thing ever to happen to CF. I think this prevented the product from becoming a dead end. J2EE can run practically anywhere, and as a result so can CF. J2EE provides all sorts of functionality that didn't exist for CF 5 and earlier. J2EE compatibility makes it very simple to extend CF with Java. But most importantly, J2EE compatibility is a big selling point for organizations that have moved to J2EE as a standard - and there are a lot of these.
