Well it would appear I would need to run Updater 6 (which I assume is the
version which ships with CF8)

Then install 8 etc or at the very least modify each instance to use it's own
JVM.

Yes. You can deploy CF 8 on the JRun that came with CF 7.02 without any 
precautions. If you deploy CF 8 on the JRun that came with an earlier 
version of CF you need to make sure you have the latest updater or else 
your JRE will be unsupported.
You need at least a recent 1.4 JRE (I think 1.4.2_6, but get the latest 
and you will be OK). CF 8 will also work on a 1.5 and a 1.6 JRE. In 
order to use the new line debugger you need to have a 1.6 JRE and that 
will give you a nice speed boost too, so I would recommend just 
upgrading your JRun too.
