C'mon people. There is a huge difference between running 1500 sites using the same codebase in a well organized cluster, and a "shared hosting environment" like we're talking about.
If you're running 1500 sites using a single codebase, I'll bet you've spent a lot of time optimizing the code for performance, and you probably have a good test environment so you don't bring down those 1500 sites when you make changes and stuff. On the other hand, since we're talking about hosting companies, imagine 500 sites on a single server, all with completely different code, written by developers of *ALL* levels of experience, and with development/modifications often being made to the server, not a test environment.
