Grant Straker - Troubleshooting and Optimizing CFMX Performance
Find out how to optimize and troubleshoot CFMX driven applications. You
will learn how to quickly
debug and identify issues such as the server CPU going to 100%, what
causes out of memory errors and
how to track memory leaks. The session will also cover how to optimize
your application for
performance and scalability as well as how to monitor what is going on
in the underlying java
architecture. Grant is an experienced ColdFusion Developer who runs
Straker Interactive, a
successful ColdFusion software development house with offices in New
Zealand, Australia and the UK.
Many of the lessons you will learn in this session have been learnt the
hard way and in 50 minutes
you could save yourself many hours of head scratching and frustration
down the track.

* Fusebox YouTube video competition ends 6/22/07
Now it's time for Fuseboxers around the world to showcase their skill
and the framework they love.
Team Fusebox wants you to put together a ten minute YouTube video and
will reward the creator of the
video that gets the most votes with a bunch of good stuff. Confirmed
prizes include a pass to
CFUNITED with more to follow.
The idea behind the competition is to generate some buzz around the
framework and get some Fusebox
demos out there to illustrate the power of the framework. We realize
that a good deal of the power
of the framework comes from ColdFusion's extensive, simple tagset, but
the same can be said for many
frameworks.
If you have an existing open source Fusebox app you want to demonstrate,
that works too, just
remember that the code has to be publicly available.
Deadline: June 22nd 2007 at 12pm (noon) CDT

* Fusebox 5.5 - it's official!
The polls on the Fusebox 5 mailing list are now closed. The next major
release of Fusebox will be
called 5.5. Accordingly, the mailing list will remain fusebox5. Members
of that mailing list now
have access to a very early Alpha build ...

* Interview with Patrick Quinn on "Application Server Analytics"
Michael Smith: This time we are talking with Patrick Quinn about
his CFUNITED-07 talk "Application Server Analytics". So why
should a developer come to your session Patrick?
Patrick Quinn: Well, because Application Server Analytics is the
most important development in the Web world in recent years! Ok,
I admit it--I have a penchant for exaggerating. But all kidding
aside, this new area of focus, which we at Webapper have labeled
"Application Server Analytics" (ASA), is ever more important for
Web sites and applications. Sure, it's not nearly as sexy as
other recent "hot topics", like AJAX, Rich Internet Applications,
and all things "Web 2.0". But, ASA is all about understanding the
internals of your sites and applications in MUCH better and
clearer detail. In short, ASA is all about up time and
performance, and as developers, those things are what allow us to
sleep at night. See, what could be more important than more sleep
for beleaguered developers!
MS: So is ASA analyzing web logs with a tool such as Web Trends?
Or is there more to it?
PQ: Excellent question! As it turns out, ASA is directly
analogous to Web analytics, but rather than focusing on traffic
patterns and other user behaviors on your Web server ( i.e.,
information you can glean from Web logs), ASA instead focuses on
application server internals--requests, threads, memory
utilization, etc. Web analytics is a very mature niche. If you
ask the marketing department about the traffic patterns and other
user behaviors on your company Website, they'll be able to give
you mountains of detailed information exactly how many people
bought toothpaste on Tuesdays at 2pm.
But, for years now, we as
developers have largely been blind to the analytics that we care
about--is my application running out of memory, suffering from
hung threads, running slowly, etc.? Ben Forta famously commented
several years ago that ColdFusion and other application servers
were "black boxes" relative to these crucial internal metrics.
So, ASA is focused on giving developers and system administrators
a detailed understanding about application server internals--
i.e., how is my application behaving? And, if there's a problem,
how do I fix it quickly? And in my talk I cover some of the
tools, methodologies, tips and tricks for doing good ASA.
MS: Ok, thanks for explaining. What tools are available for ASA?
PQ: Well, one of the interesting things about this talk is the
part where I discuss what ASA is NOT. In fact, there are tons of
tools (especially for Windows servers) that are in the category
of "monitoring" tools. But, virtually all of these fall short of
telling you what's going on inside your ColdFusion server(s) and
application(s). Virtually all of the network, CPU, memory and
other monitoring tools look at ColdFusion from the outside-in.
The truly useful information, however, is on the inside, which
none of these tools can see.
Remember, ASA is all about
application server internals. As many people know, we're the
creators of SeeFusion, which is specifically designed as an ASA
tool--it monitors and troubleshoots ColdFusion from the inside
(specifically, inside the JVM). We were the first to create such
a product (in 2004), and there are competitors in the niche now
(FusionReactor, ColdFusion 8, etc.), and more coming, which in
our opinion is an endorsement of the idea that ASA is an
important new concept that needs more attention. So, there's an
increasing number of choices for tools that allow you to do ASA,
and there are more and different ones coming, and, more
importantly, the ASA knowledge base will continue to grow, which
translates to faster, more stable applications and servers, and
much faster troubleshooting processes when problems do occur.
MS: So now I can see what is going on inside ColdFusion server
what can I do with it?
PQ: This is really the most important part of ASA. In our
opinion, as ASA evolves, and the tools and methodologies improve,
solving problems with your application(s) will become much more
efficient. We see ASA evolving to where, when you have a problem
with an application (performance and/or stability),
troubleshooting and fixing the problem will consist of a series
of clicks, rather than a series of days. Specifically, you'll be
able to move fluidly from notification of the problem to
identification of the cause (and then, of course, to fixing). If,
as they say, 90% of the cost of an application is in lifetime
maintenance, then this will result in huge savings of time and
money.
But, ASA isn't only about what's possible in the future. There
are lots of very clear ways that you can use ASA tools and
methods today to fix problems faster, and that's what I'll be
talking about.
MS: Great! Can you give me an example of a problem that ASA helped
solve?
PQ: Well, even though we're only just now attempting to apply a
name to this niche, and to the
work it entails, the fact is that we've (along with lots of other
people) been doing ASA all along.
Through our consulting practice, we use these ASA concepts and tools to
solve performance and
stability problems every day for our customers. Nowaday, with tools like
our SeeFusion product, and
competing products like FusionReactor and ColdFusion 8, ASA will only
get faster and easier. To
answer your question, one concrete example was a bug we discovered in
the tag, which
Adobe verified a while back. We were monitoring a server with SeeFusion,
and generating stack traces
on the fly for hung requests, and we found that the stacks were always
stuck in the same spot inside
a tag within a tag. We further determined that the problem was related
to string
expressions in the tag. So, we switched the affected statements to
equivalent
/ blocks, and the severe performance and stability problem disappeared
immediately.
All of this took just a few short hours using ASA. That's the promise of
good ASA work.
MS: Wow! I will look forward to seeing you at CFUNITED.
PQ: In the proudest Webapper tradition, first round of drinks are on us!

Application Server Analytics
*************************
Application Server Analytics (ASA) is an evolving niche in Web-based
software development. It consists of a combination of tools and
methodologies for real-time monitoring and troubleshooting of Web sites
and applications. The goal of ASA is to improve performance and
stability (and thus uptime) for Web applications by helping developers
and systems administrators "see" application server internals much more
clearly, and also by allowing for much easier use of ASA metrics to fix
and even prevent problems.
