There is a loading message graphic thingy built in somewhere, as it's part of some of the other controls (like autocomplete), but I can't recall at the moment where it is. I'll try to dig it up and see if there's a simple way to get it showing automatically for the mxData tag.
As for the 10000 courses, if the people select ALL for each box, do you want to give them all 1000 courses? Otherwise, we can set it up so that it doesn't do a request immediately on page load and it will start filtering after the first choice instead.
