I have actually done pretty extensive work using s3 as an image server. I
started using the S3 wrapper that Joe Danziger put together. It worked quite
well once you "got" the way that S3 does things... folders aren't really
folders etc.

I had to do some tweaking to it to get exactly what I wanted but it was a
great starting point and comes with some nice tools to let you "browse" your
buckets.
