Imagine taking that to the next level. I worked on a project 2 years ago to build a software distribution with a full desktop and loaded with programs for scientific work: thermodynamic calculators, integrated circuit designers, 3D modeling, linear algebra, etc. In the end we had a bootable and installable DVD with all the software a student would need for all his undergraduate classes.
