I'm going to take a wild stab and say it's the version of the mysql driver. Try using mysql-connector-java-3.0.17-ga instead. Or perhaps whatever driver cf8 ships with... I don't think I saw the problem behavior with cf8's built-in mysql5 driver... But this could be something different.
