Look at the top line of your HTML document. If it's an XHTML document, then you're getting the right shit. If you choose another DOCTYPE, Dreamweaver will generate valid HTML for that DOCTYPE as well. When you create new HTML documents in Dreamweaver, by default they are XHTML, because XHTML is the shit.
