There are a number of things which can prevent a post from showing up. Non-plain text format, spam subjects, subjects that include a spam warning ([spam-score low], etc.) and plain mail server failures. I've even seen mail sent through Google not getting delivered and it was sent to Adobe. On the flip side, mail from the server can fail to arrive due to it being rejected by the receiving mail server, being labeled as spam, a timeout connecting to the receiving mail server and a few other more obscure reasons. I go through the bounced mail regularly to remove the addresses of people who's accounts are 'dead' or have multiple reoccurring problems.
