Okay, after all that, I just answered my own question. I had created a SQL user, and set the default database on that SQL user to be the one I wanted. However, I had *not* specifically added that user to the list of users on that database. I don't recall needing to do that in SQL Server 2000--I thought that setting a default database was enough. So, perhaps this is new to SQL 2005, or perhaps I just don't recall doing that in SQL 2000.
