yup.

sounds like a job for a staging table just for inserts w/out any indexes which 
moves the data via triggers or whatever to "real" tables for maintenance & 
querying. one way we handled municipal tax data at tax time (nobody comes to 
the 
municipality to pay their taxes until the very last nanosecond).
