Hello The problem with EXIF metadata getting lost is in our track and should be fixed in the next update from Adobe. So a workaround (download img through CFHTTP) can be avoided after that and should directly be able to read the Image metadata from the URL.
Also have filed a bug for the problem mentioned by Paul here in this thread.
