I thought an update may be useful...

I stopped all the CF services and made a full copy of my JRun4 folder.

I uninstalled CF and rebooted, then re-installed CF again, re-applied the
hotfixes installed the CFX tags, set up the datasources etc and generally
re-configured the server to be in the same config as the previous install.

I then re-ran the code to consume the web service and it worked just fine.

Then I did a windiff on my new JRun4 folder and the copy I made before I
uninstalled CF.

Most of the differences were in log files and were down to date/time values
being different but there were a couple of critical differences in the
compiled class files that look to me suspiciously like corruption. So next
time it occurs. I'll be deleting the class files and re-running the code to
see if that fixes it. 

Certainly there is nothing else that looks like a problem in the JRun
folder.
