Thanks Dave. The email in the cfcatch block had 'undefined values' since I could not connect in the first place. The email itself was creating the error.

By default, your page will continue executing after CFCATCH, and if you don't have anything below that that'll work without the CFHTTP succeeding, you should probably abort the processing of the page: <cftry> ... problem code here ... <cfcatch type="whatever"> ... your response to the problem ... </cfcatch> </cftry> ..... the rest of your page, which will execute after the tried code works, or after the CFCATCH works ...
