I had a similar problem with Spry on IE6 a couple of days ago, with images not loading, and other times they would load, there was no real pattern to it.
The work around I achieved was preloading the images, the new version of Spry (1.6) has a javascript file call SpryImageLoader.js which is a preloader, you could try an use this, I couldn't find any documentation on how it works though.
