No, you won't. The appliances are quite narrow in their focus, and limited
mostly to free, open-source software.

VMware won't protect you from hardware failures, but as long as you keep a
copy of your VM, you can run that copy anywhere you can install VMware
Player.

Correct.

Creating a VM is a lot like configuring actual hardware - you install an OS,
your apps, etc. If you have an existing installation, you can create a VM
from it using the free VMware Converter, although you may need to reactivate
the OS if your OS requires activation.
