Hi Nathan, thanks for the reply. yes i also agree that the standard used 
(row,cell) is not a good one but we are creating it to load into a dhtml grid 
component bought from a company and that is the standard we have to adopt in 
order to import it into the grid.

Thanks for your help, do you have an example of how to pass an xmlnode into a 
recursive function and to manipulate that node whilst in the function. i have 
used recursive functions before when building infinite trees but not sure how 
to have an xmlnode as a paramater or how to use it in there. thanks very much
