Structures, queries, arrays and CFC instances are complex data objects -
they can't be represented directly as strings. So, if you want to pass them
around in an environment in which you're limited to string data, such as
HTTP requests, log files, etc, you need to have some way to represent them
as strings. The process of creating this representation is called
serialization.

Likewise, when you convert them back, that's deserialization.
