Yeah... but what could they do if they weren't an idiot? The mapping already exists (and presumably is in use) for another site. You can't point it to "your" site without breaking thiers. I think the problem is pretty much intractable: on a shared server you can't have the same mapping point to two different places. There's just no fix that would make everybody happy - somebody has to change their code to use a different mapping. That said I'm betting that the support person didn't explain this well and that probably caused the hard feelings more than anything else.
