It's an Adobe license type now. That's just the way it is ;). I've only ever installed from scratch, but I doubt it's going to require the original media be in the drive. In fact, the key works on fresh installs, as well as upgrades. My day job received three CF8 Ent updates (serials, really) and they worked fine without having CF7 media present.
