I'd like to add some quick comments. a) my approach is done when this particular form action usually also have some impact on the Main/Parent window hence justification of reloading this window, otherwise, the cost of reloading the Main window does not seem to be necessary unless not much process goinig on with the Main window. So, if the action of the form in question does not have much to do with the Main window (process-wise) then the javascript approach, I think, is the way to go because it's more efficient (not reloading the Main window). b) it seems a bit odd that I would write like "I'm not sure if I can understand your question" instead of something like "I'm not sure if I understand your question correctly..." because the former's tune is not so friendly and why would one wants to sacrifice his time to subtract what he's adding...
