It really depends on what client you are running. With the windows VPN client you can alter the route table after making the VPN connection to allow local traffic. I happen to use a Nortel client, which is a pain. If the route table is modified after the VPN connection is made, the Nortel client detects that and drops the VPN connection. I've just learned to live with it. I'm generally developing remotely or locally; not both. If I need to move data from remote to my local vmware machine I will VPN from within the virtual machine and migrate the data. That allows my host PC to continue to have local access.
