Since you var scoped the query name, the variable "q" becomes local to the method. If you were to remove the var scoping, it would leak into the variables scope, and (under load) would have caused strange behavior, and would make it very hard to track down the source of the bug. This is the reason so many of us on this list preach var scoping.
