excellent thanks very much sonny, your right this information is stored in the key_column_usage table and has the name of the columns - the tables they are in - and the names of their constraints. so i can query it based on the table name and the column name - get the constraint name, delete that first and then delete the foreign key.
thanks very much both your help with this, i was feeling lost so appreciate it no end :) best wishes richard ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Adobe® ColdFusion® 8 software 8 is the most important and dramatic release to date Get the Free Trial http://ad.doubleclick.net/clk;160198600;22374440;w Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Talk/message.cfm/messageid:301546 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=11502.10531.4
