Dates back to when computers uses teletypes for output. Carriage return is
literally that - it returned the daisywheel carriage back to the beginning
of the line. Line feed fed the paper up one line.

Windows use CR and LF for an end of line. UNIX uses LF only. Macs use CR
only.
