Alagad's ImageComponent (http://www.alagad.com) is platform independent & the CFC doesn't need to be 'installed' on the server, it can sit in the same directory as the page that is calling it.
The only problem it that it's a commercial product (US$150) but if an upgrade to CF8 isn't likely in the near future it might be a worthwhile investment. HTH.
