I've set up a database cluster using PGCluster (pgcluster.org) and Slony (http://slony.info/) seems to be gaining a lot of traction recently. Both of which are free solutions. Commercial support is available for Slony, and as you say, there are a slew of commercial clustering solutions for PostgreSQL out there.
