The variables scope should not be used for what Rick was suggesting
but 'avoid[ing] the variables scope inside of a CFC..' in general is
not correct. What *is* considered bad design however, is mixing logic
with display code as you suggest ('Why not just put the validation
code right in the page...').

Rick is simply putting the data validation into a method within a cfc
(not a form_validation.cfc), and seperating his logic; nothing awkward
about it.
