Okay, so I'm answering most of my own questions, and coming up with more. I found:
http://www.adobe.com/products/coldfusion/pdfs/cf8_systemsupportmatrix.pdf which is a more updated list of supported versions/platforms, etc. so I got that answer. Now I'm running into a problem where after installing CF and expanding my cfusion.war file, there is no application.xml to edit as instructed in the docs. Anyone seen this happen?
