+1 to what Charlie said. As far as lessening the learning curve, definitely use one of the JS libraries. jQuery is great. I have been using Spry the last week or so and I really like it a *lot*. It is really easy to use and is rolled into DW CS3 and CS4, as well as Aptana. I have been able to do some really cool stuff with very little code with both Spry and jQuery.
