I am guessing you are not using a primary key. I think your cfif is a
little off,
try this
<cfquery datasource="text">
UPDATE alert
SET alert = <cfif IsDefined("FORM.alert") AND
len(FORM.alert)>'#FORM.alert#'<cfelse>NULL</cfif>
WHERE alert = '#FORM.alert#';
</cfquery>
<cflocation url="../../status1.cfm?msg=Alert+Title+added+successfully.">
</cfif>
