Pinging is done via a set of URLs, with a few shortcuts. If you put @technorati as a url, it will ping technorati. Ditto for @weblogs and @icerocket. I built those in as I thought (back then) that they were common ones folks would want, AND they have special requirements. Any other URL is simply done with CFHTTP.
One kinda cool trick is that in CF8, blockcfc will automatically do all of this via cfthread to make the ping quicker.
