We'll go down the updated DataDirect drivers path first before we try Oracle's thin client drivers. >The character set is applied at the database level. The DBAs have agreed to change the character set setting so we'll see what that does. It just seems strange to me that with ColdFusion using UTF-8 and Oracle using UTF-8 we get these non-standard characters popping up so we're going to change the setting in Oracle to US7ASCII to see if that fixes the problem . . .
