Instead of mapping the images directly to the UNC path I would create a virtual folder to the UNC path and then reference that virtual folder for your images. You don;t want to go around exposing your server structure. Plus, I don't think outside of an intranet running on a private network that it will work using the UNC path... I could be wrong though, I have not tested it.
