I've had the same problem, although the file will open after the user clicks "yes". I Looked to see if there's a different MIME type to use for .xlsx files vs. .xls files, and there is (see http://blogs.msdn.com/vsofficedeveloper/pages/Office-2007-Open-XML-MIME-Types.aspx). But using that mime type didn't help at all; the file saved can't even be opened.
