I am a jQuery newbie so I definitely feel your pain. One method that has worked for me is to the bottom-up approach.
Start with a bare-bone simple form with just the jQuery stuff and then add the other stuff you want in, one by one. Make sure to also strip down your CSS file to just those definitions directly relating to the jQuery stuff. This way you can figure out when it stops working and then narrow it down to the prime suspect. The other thing is to test the stuff at each stage in all browsers you have. If it doesn't work in any of them, then you know the problem is your code.
